Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect
Everything you need to know before your first laser hair removal appointment at Haus of Laser Sydney.
How laser hair removal works
The laser sends concentrated light into the hair follicle. The pigment in the hair absorbs that light and converts it to heat, which damages the follicle and slows or stops future growth — without harming the skin around it.
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only affects follicles in their active growth phase. That is why a course of treatments is needed rather than a single session.
The technology we use
We treat with the Candela GentleMax Pro, a medical-grade system widely regarded as one of the best available. It combines two wavelengths, which lets us adjust the treatment to your skin tone and hair type rather than applying one setting to everyone.
All treatments are carried out by qualified laser technicians.
Is it suitable for my skin?
Laser is suitable for all skin types. Results are strongest on dark hair, because the laser targets pigment. Very fine, light blonde, red, grey or white hair contains little pigment and responds poorly — if that describes your hair, speak to us before booking.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients see significant reduction within 4 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Hormonal areas such as the face, chin and neck often need more, and ongoing maintenance sessions.
This varies from person to person. Hair thickness, hormones and the area being treated all affect how many sessions you need.
Before your appointment
- Shave the area 24 hours before — do not wax, pluck or use epilation for 4 weeks prior, as the laser needs an intact follicle to target
- Avoid sun exposure, solariums and fake tan for 2 weeks before
- Come with clean skin, free of deodorant, moisturiser and makeup on the treatment area
- Tell us about any medication you are taking, including anything that increases light sensitivity such as Roaccutane or certain antibiotics
What it feels like
Most people describe it as a warm flick against the skin. The GentleMax Pro has an integrated cooling system that makes it considerably more comfortable than older lasers. Sessions are quick — underarms take a few minutes, full legs longer.
Afterwards
- Mild redness and slight swelling around the follicles is normal and usually settles within a few hours
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, spas and strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid sun exposure and wear SPF on treated areas
- Treated hairs will shed over the following one to three weeks — this is normal and not regrowth
- Do not wax or pluck between sessions. Shaving is fine
When laser may not be right for you
Laser is not suitable during pregnancy, over active infections, or on recently tanned or sunburnt skin. If you have a history of keloid scarring, cold sores in the treatment area, a photosensitising condition, or are taking photosensitising medication, please contact us before booking so we can advise.
If you are unsure about anything, get in touch. We would rather answer a question than have you book the wrong treatment.
